Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy
In times of stress our brains respond, our bodies go into "Fight, Flight, Freeze or Faint" mode. This is very helpful when we are actually in a dangerous situation because it protects us. But problems can occur over time - if we mistakenly believe that we are under threat when we are not. When something reminds us of previous trauma, our brain processes it as if it is happening right now; our brain isn't able to tell the difference between a threat from the past or a threat in the present. This is where EMDR can be beneficial.
EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987. EMDR works to change the way traumatic memories are stored in the brain. Instead of having an intense emotional reaction to a previously experienced traumatic event, we are now able to recall the event without the emotional trauma. During a therapy session, you will be directed to engage in bilateral stimulation, which is a process that encourages both sides of the brain to communicate. You will still remember what happened but the memory becomes less distressing, current symptoms decrease, and you are better able to function and cope in the present.
Information related to the trauma or distressing event is accessed through thoughts (images and self-beliefs), emotions, and body sensations in a structured format that allows a person to work with the memory. It creates new neural networks which recognize that the event is in the past rather than occurring in the present. EMDR has been found to be effective in treating a variety of conditions, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and phobias. It is a safe and non-invasive treatment that has been used successfully with both adults and children. If you are struggling with any of these conditions, EMDR may be a helpful treatment option.
